(Apologies that this review is in English)I have been aware that this book was being produced and luckily found it on the Germany site, as it is not due to appear on the UK site until the end of January,There is no way I could wait so long and ordered from Germany instead. I have been totally impressed with the delivery from Germany Amazon to my address in the UK, which took just 4 days and was even delivered on a Sunday.This book is larger than Guge and it is full of spectacular photos of Alchi and great detailed information about each one.I have been to Alchi three times and always felt that I was only seeing a fraction of the works, as the lighting has always beem dim.Now I know exactly what I have been missing and look forward to going back to Alchi to try and find my favourite parts.I have only just received this yesterday and am not academically trained in the artworks of Tibetan Buddhism, but from a first look here are examples of my own highlights:- The five page fold out of the colossal sculptures from outside is a revelation: I had no idea the viewing niches existed. How stunning to see them surrounded by the paintings.- I love the paintings of the goddesses and female protectors such as Palden Lhamo and Dorje Chenmo.-The costumes of figures and facial expressions are so detailed. The panels of wood and fabric are gorgeous: very surprising to see even martial arts depicted.-Many photos of my favourite Nagas and dynamic flying and running deities and figures: the movement and even humour in the paintings is a sight to behold. Many hungry ghosts, too and ascetic figures. Hindu deities. Every page is full of wonders including Pages 309 and 315.-The three dimensional effect of the photography is wonderful (Page 222, 249)This book is a total masterpiece and the work and knowledge and sheer joy that has gone into this is breathtaking. I am going to have countless hours enjoying this work. Many thanks and congratulations to Peter Van Ham and Amy Heller. I am in awe of you both and the creators of Alchi.As is my way with Peter Van Ham's books, I always look at the photos first and then an initial question arises that I look forward to looking into as I discover the book in detail: in this one at first glance, Vajrapani seems to be less prominent and Manjushri/Yamantaka seems to be depicted instead? Das Kloster Alchi im indischen Bundesstaat Ladakh gehört zu den eindrucksvollsten künstlerischen Zeugnissen des frühen tibetischen Buddhismus, die erhalten sind. Es ist vor allem der geschlossene Eindruck, der sich beim Besucher einprägt, die Symbolsprache, die wie aus einem Guss wirkt und der Bilderschmuck, der sich tatsächlich zum größten Teil im Originalzustand befindet. Der dreigeschossige Sumtsek birgt eine Ausstattung, die aus dem späten 11. Jahrhundert stammt und bereits seit über 100 Jahren das Interesse der Historiker und Archäologen auf sich zieht. 1909 kam August Hermann Francke in das Alchi-Tal, begründete damit die Alchi-Forschung und machte die ersten Innenaufnahmen, von denen auch einige hier im Buch reproduziert sind.In der Regel ist das Fotografieren in Alchi aus konservatorischen Gründen untersagt, Peter van Ham erhielt eine der seltenen Ausnahmegenehmigungen und durfte den gesamten Komplex im Detail dokumentieren. 2015 hat er bereits in ähnlicher Weise das weniger bekannte Kloster Tabo aufgenommen.Nach einleitenden Kapiteln zur geografischen Lage, der (westlichen) Entdeckungsgeschichte sowie der bisher rekonstruierbaren Entstehungsgeschichte und zur Problematik der genauen Datierung, folgen mehrere Einzelkapitel über die allgemeine Ikonografie des Bilderschmucks und seiner Interpretation sowie zum spezifischen Erzählprogramm, insbesondere mit Bezug auf die Stifterfiguren und den stilistischen Besonderheiten. Alchi ist durch seine isolierte Lage im Grenzgebiet zwischen China und Indien von den Zerstörungen durch muslimische Eroberer genauso verschont geblieben, wie von denen der Chinesen nach der Revolution.Im Einzelkapiteln werden im Anschluss alle Hauptgebäude im Detail vorgestellt. Dazu gehören der Dukhang, der Sumtsek und der Jampal Lhakhang, sowie die umgebenden Chörten und die niederrangigen Begleittempel. Ausgehend von großformatigen Übersichtsfotos, die einen guten Eindruck von den räumlichen Gegebenheiten vermitteln, wird das Bildprogramm des Wandschmucks in immer höherer Vergrößerung langsam "herangezoomt", wobei der jeweilige ikonografische und religiöse Kontext sehr fachkundig und im Detail erklärt wird. Es ist meiner Meinung nach diesmal besser als im Vorgängerband "Tabo" gelungen, die Einzelaufnahmen so zu beschreiben, dass sie auch für den Leser an den jeweiligen Platz im Raum lokalisiert werden können. Noch anschaulicher wären wahrscheinlich schematische Grund- und Aufrisse gewesen, aber die Kombination aus textlicher Beschreibung und Aufnahmen verschiedener Vergrößerungsstufen erlaubt auch eine gute Orientierung.Die in einem eingängigen Englisch verfassten Texte haben eine ungewöhnlich hohe Informationsdichte und zeugen von einer intensiven Beschäftigung mit der Materie und von viel fachlicher Expertise, insbesondere über den indotibetischen Bilderkanon und die Einflüsse, die mit den kaschmirischen Kunsthandwerkern ins Alchi Tal kamen. Der Sachstand ist sehr aktuell, wobei sich die thematische Eindringtiefe an ein Fachpublikum, sowie an interessierte Laien richtet.Das Kloster Alchi ist zwar eine der touristischen Hauptattraktionen von Ladakh, aber der Status als Weltkulturerbe blieb ihm bislang versagt, wenngleich es seit 1997 auf der Kandidatenliste steht. Wenn man die technisch brillanten Aufnahmen in dieser umfangreichen Monografie betrachtet, ist das kaum nachvollziehbar. Auch sind dringend konservatorische Maßnahmen erforderlich, denn der Zerfall schreitet fort, wie man selbst im Vergleich mit den schwarz-weiß Aufnahmen von 1909 feststellen kann. Bücher wie dieses sind daher von kaum zu unterschätzender Bedeutung, um diese unwiederbringlichen Kulturschätze ins allgemeine Bewusstsein zu bringen.
